Privacy Policy
Keeping Your Data Safe
"At A Party" is a dating app, and you trust us with personal things. This policy explains what we collect, why, who sees it, and the choices you have. By using "At A Party" you acknowledge this Privacy Policy. Please take the time to read it.
We sometimes use capitalised terms; if they are not defined here, they are defined in our Terms of Service. "At A Party" is a trading name of Breezer Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales, which is the "data controller" for your personal information under the UK General Data Protection Regulation ("UK GDPR") and the Data Protection Act 2018. This policy covers the "At A Party" mobile app and the web app that runs inside it (together, the "Service"). Our website has its own Website Privacy Policy.
1. What We Collect, and Why
a. What you give us
- Your account: your email address, used to verify you and to sign you in, and the verification codes we send to it.
- Your profile: your forename, date of birth (you must be 18 or over), gender, pronouns, who you would like to date, and your photos and videos.
- Your location: a point on a map that you choose, or search for, which we round to about 100 metres before it leaves your device, and the name of the nearest town or city. We never read your device's GPS or ask the phone for its position.
- Your preferences: the age range and distance you want to date within, and the units you prefer.
- Things that help your AI know you: your answers to our questions, anything you choose to paste in from ChatGPT or similar, the questions you want asked on dates, how you spread your AI strength points, and your answers to date questions.
- Dates and chats: the dates you start and join, the messages you send, and the gifts you buy or receive in the Service.
- Safety: blocks you make, and reports you file, including anything you write in a report.
- Support: anything you send us by email or our contact form.
b. What other people tell us about you
- Friends: anyone with your friend link can write answers about you, with a name of their choosing. We store what they write, the name they give, and a random key held in a cookie on their device so they can come back and edit their answers. Their answers reach your AI only if you approve them, and you can delete any of them.
- Other users: reports about you from other users.
c. What we collect automatically
- Your device: your IP address, device model, operating system and app version, and a push notification token so we can send you notifications.
- Using the Service: when you use the app, the profiles you view, skip, spend time on or share, and the dates you start. We use these to decide who is shown to whom.
- Cookies inside the app: the web app that runs inside the app keeps you signed in and remembers a few settings. It contains no advertising cookies or tracking pixels, although the map on the location page is Google's, and Google may set its own cookies when it loads.
- Crashes and errors: reports when the app crashes or something fails, through Google Firebase Crashlytics.
- Analytics and advertising measurement: basic events such as a first launch, a new account or a purchase, through Google Firebase Analytics and Meta's app SDK, so we can tell which of our adverts led to an install. On iOS we do not ask for or use your advertising identifier and the app never shows the "Allow tracking" prompt; Meta's advertiser-ID collection is switched off. On Android, Google's advertising ID permission is declared by Firebase Analytics.
d. Your purchases
You buy through the Apple App Store or Google Play. They process the payment and keep your payment details; we never see your card number. We receive what you bought, when, the price and currency, and a transaction reference, which we keep for our accounts and to deliver what you bought.
e. Sexual orientation and other sensitive information
Telling us your gender and who you would like to date reveals information about your sexual orientation, which is "special category" data. We use it to show you the right people and to show you to them, and we only do so with your explicit consent, which you give when you set those options. You can change them in the app at any time; if you withdraw them we can no longer show you matches. Photos, answers and anything you paste in or write may also reveal other sensitive things about you, including religion, health or ethnicity. We do not look for these, but your AI and other users may see what you choose to share, so share only what you are comfortable with.
2. How We Use It, and On What Basis
- To provide the Service (contract): to create and run your account, show your profile to other users and theirs to you, run dates and chats, deliver what you buy, and send you service messages.
- To suggest people and run your AI (contract, and your consent for orientation): ranking profiles by your preferences and how people respond, and having your AI take part in dates. See "Automated processing" below.
- To keep people safe (our legitimate interests, and legal obligations): checking uploads for explicit, violent or hateful images, reviewing reports, blocking abusers, preventing fraud and fake accounts, and enforcing our Terms of Service.
- To improve the Service and measure our adverts (our legitimate interests, and consent where the law requires it): analytics, crash reports and ad attribution.
- To notify you (contract, or your consent): in-app notifications, push notifications and emails about your dates, chats and gifts. You choose which push notifications you receive.
- To keep our records and meet the law (legal obligation): keeping accounting and tax records of purchases.
We do not sell your personal information.
3. Automated Processing
- Your AI. When you start or join a date, your profile and what you have told your AI are sent, with the other person's profile, to an AI model (Amazon Bedrock, in Ireland), which produces a compatibility score and a short summary. Both people's AIs are judged separately, so each of you gets your own verdict. The summary and score are shown to you; the other person never sees yours. Gifts you give or answers you write on a date can raise your score. A low score can stop you being the one to send the first message in a chat; it never stops the other person from messaging you. Details such as phone numbers and email addresses are removed before text is sent to the model.
- Choosing who you see. Profiles are ranked by your age and distance settings, how recently you saw them, how people have responded to their profile, and whether they are using the app.
- Content moderation. Photos and videos are checked by Amazon Rekognition. Explicit, violent, hateful or disturbing content can be removed automatically, and uncertain cases go to a person.
These are automated, and they affect what you and others see, so you can ask us for a person to look at any decision about you, such as a removed photo, via our contact form. We use them to run the Service, not to take decisions that have legal effects on you.
4. Who Sees Your Information
a. Other users
Other users can see your forename, age, photos and videos, your pronouns if you have set them, the name of your town or city and roughly how far away you are. They cannot see your email address, your exact location, or your date of birth. Anything you say in chat is seen by the person you are chatting with. If you give a gift, the other person sees who gave it and what it was.
b. Companies that help us run the Service
- Amazon Web Services: hosting, file storage, email delivery, content moderation and the AI model, in Ireland.
- Google: push notifications, crash reports and analytics through Firebase; map and place search on the location page through Google Maps; and advertising measurement through Google Ads.
- Apple and Google: your app store account and purchases, and delivery of push notifications to your phone.
- Meta: advertising measurement, through its app SDK.
These companies may only use your information to provide their service to us, and in some cases for their own purposes as their own policies describe.
c. Others
- People and authorities we are required to tell, for example to respond to a court order, to protect people from serious harm, or in connection with a crime.
- A buyer or successor, if Breezer Ltd is involved in a merger, sale or reorganisation.
5. Your Choices
- Push notifications: switch them off in the app's notification settings, or in your phone's settings.
- Email: use the unsubscribe link in an email. We will still send you messages that are necessary for your account.
- Your profile and preferences: edit or remove them in the app at any time.
- Tracking: the app does not ask to track you across other companies' apps and websites.
- Your friends' answers: approve or delete them on your AI page.
6. Your Rights
You can ask us for a copy of your information, to correct it, to delete it, to restrict how we use it, to object to our use of it, or to move it to another service, and you can withdraw any consent you have given. To do any of these, email hey [at] ataparty [dot] app. We may need to check who you are first. You can also edit your information in the app, and close your account yourself, in the settings. If you are unhappy with how we have used your information you can complain to us, and to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
7. Keeping It, and Closing Your Account
We keep your information for as long as your account is open. If you use the "Close Account" option in the settings, we delete your profile, photos and videos, the messages you sent, your answers, your AI's data, your notifications and your push tokens, and your account is hidden from everybody else.
A few things are kept after closure:
- Purchase records: we keep these for as long as accounting and tax law requires, which is currently six years in the UK.
- A scrambled (hashed) copy of your email address, which cannot be read back, so that if you return, or somebody else tries to use your account, we can recognise it and restore it. A restored account starts again with a blank profile.
- Photos or videos we removed for breaking our rules, and reports about you, kept in private storage as a record, as they may be evidence if something illegal is involved.
Your chats are deleted when you close your account, so the other person loses the conversation too.
8. Security
Your account is protected so that only you can access it, and the personal information we hold is kept on access-controlled servers with technical and organisational safeguards against loss and misuse. While we work hard to protect it, no system is completely secure and we cannot guarantee that it will never be accessed improperly. If we learn of a breach that affects you, we will tell you, and the Information Commissioner's Office where required.
9. International Transfers
"At A Party" is operated by a company in the United Kingdom. Your information is stored on servers in Ireland, in the European Economic Area, and transfers from the United Kingdom to the EEA rely on the UK's adequacy decision for the EEA. Some of the providers listed above, such as Google and Meta, may process information in other countries, including the United States. Where they do, the transfer is made under safeguards such as an adequacy decision, the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.
10. Children
The Service is for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe somebody under 18 is using the Service, please tell us at hey [at] ataparty [dot] app and we will close their account and delete their information.
11. Changes to this Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we make changes, we will publish the new version on this page and change the date at the bottom, and if the changes are significant we will tell you in the app. Continuing to use the Service after a change means you accept it.
12. Contact Us
If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy or how we handle your information, email hey [at] ataparty [dot] app, or write to us at 9 Woodlands Avenue, Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, HD9 7SP, United Kingdom.
